Music lessons · Kāpiti Coast
Learn music on the Coast, with a working musician.
There's something special about learning music close to home, with someone who actually does it for a living. I'm a folk-soul singer-songwriter based at Waikanae Beach, and I teach the way I play — warm, honest and built around real songs from the very first lesson.
Whether you want to find your singing voice, learn acoustic guitar that serves a song, or finally write the songs you've been carrying around, these lessons meet you where you are. No auditions, no judgement, no pressure — just a relaxed hour with the music you actually want to make.
Most of my Kāpiti students come to me in person, but everything I teach works beautifully online too, so your lessons can fit around your life.

What you can learn
Three ways to make music
Singing, guitar and songwriting — learn one, or weave them together. They're three sides of the same craft, and Kāpiti students often start with one and pick up the others as they go.
A working musician on the Coast
Learn from someone who does this for real.
I'm a folk-soul singer-songwriter based at Waikanae Beach, with 25+ years and an acoustic guitar behind me. I've played London stages, recorded in studios in Dublin, London and New Orleans, and performed a live session for RNZ National's "In Session". The music I teach is the music I actually make.
That matters for a local teacher: you're not getting theory from a textbook, you're getting the real, hard-won craft of writing and performing songs — and a teacher who's still out there doing it.

Good to know
Kāpiti music lessons, answered
Where on the Kāpiti Coast do you teach?
In-person lessons are based at Waikanae Beach. It's an easy trip from across the Coast — Waikanae, Paraparaumu, Raumati and Ōtaki are all close by — so wherever on Kāpiti you're coming from, you're welcome. If getting here in person doesn't suit, online lessons cover the same ground from wherever you are.
Do you teach in person or online for Coast students?
Both. Most Kāpiti students come to me in person at Waikanae Beach, and that face-to-face contact is hard to beat. But online lessons over video work really well too, so if you're short on time, away travelling or further up the Coast, you can keep your lessons going from home at the same price.
Do you teach kids and adults?
Yes — adults and teens are very welcome and a big part of who I teach, and younger students are welcome by arrangement too. There's no audition and no judgement, just a relaxed, encouraging lesson built around the music you actually want to make, at a pace that suits the student.
How much are lessons in Kāpiti?
Lessons are $80 per 60-minute session, the same price whether you learn in person on the Coast or online. Your first lesson is a relaxed conversation as much as a lesson — get in touch and I'll confirm current availability.
Do you teach total beginners?
Absolutely — total beginners are very welcome, whether you're singing for the first time, holding a guitar for the first time or starting to write your first song. You don't need any background, any 'good ear' or any experience. We start exactly where you are and build from there.
