Online Music Lessons NZ-wide & Worldwide — Singing, Guitar & Songwriting
Learn singing, guitar or songwriting from anywhere, one-to-one over video with a working singer-songwriter of 25+ years, at $80 per 60-minute lesson — the same price as in person. Same warm, focused lesson, just on your screen, in your own room.
Online music lessons
Learn from anywhere.
Distance shouldn't decide whether you get to play. Whether you're in Wellington, somewhere else in Aotearoa or on the other side of the world, you can learn singing, guitar or songwriting with me one-to-one over video — the same lessons I teach in the room, simply delivered down the line.
I'm a singer-songwriter who has spent 25+ years performing and recording — in studios in Dublin, London and New Orleans, and in a live session for RNZ National's "In Session" — and online teaching has become a big part of how I work. A music lesson is, at heart, a conversation about your voice or your playing — and that travels beautifully over a video call.
You bring the instrument and the song you'd love to play; I'll bring the ears, the encouragement and the plan. We start on real music from the very first lesson.
How online lessons work
Simple to set up
We meet on Zoom (or a similar video call) at a time that suits you. There's nothing technical to master — if you can make a video call, you can take a lesson. Here's all you need.
-
A device with a camera
A laptop, phone or tablet is perfect. We use Zoom or a similar video app — I'll send you a link, and you just click to join.
-
A stable connection
A reasonably steady internet connection keeps the sound and picture clear. Home wi-fi or a good mobile signal is usually plenty.
-
A quiet room
Somewhere you can play and sing without interruption. It doesn't need to be soundproof — just a space where you feel free to make a noise.
-
Your instrument
Your guitar — or just your voice for singing. For songwriting, a notebook or your phone for jotting down ideas is all it takes.
-
The camera, well placed
Prop your device so I can see your hands and face. That's the one thing that makes online lessons sing — and I'll help you get the angle right in minutes.
-
A time that suits
We pick a regular slot that works for your week — including evenings — and I'll keep notes you can refer back to between lessons.
Why it works
As good as in the room
It's natural to wonder whether online can really match a lesson in person. In my experience it absolutely can — and for some students it's even better. One-to-one teaching is about close attention, and a video call gives you exactly that: just you, your music and an encouraging set of ears.
- Focused one-to-one attention — no shared room, no distractions
- Easy to record the lesson or my notes so you can revisit them
- No commute — more time for the music, less time in the car
- You play in your own space, where you actually practise
- Flexible scheduling, including evening slots that fit around work
- Exactly the same lesson, plan and care as face to face
What you can learn
Three lessons, all online
Whichever you choose, it's the same teacher and the same care — and you're welcome to weave two or three together over time.
For Wellington students
Online lessons for Wellington
If you're in Wellington or Porirua, online lessons are the easy way to learn with me. I'm based at Waikanae Beach on the Kāpiti Coast, and Wellington students learn with me entirely over video — there's no commute up or down the line, and no sitting in traffic on the way home from work.
To be clear: there's no in-person Wellington studio. Lessons for Wellington and Porirua are online, which is exactly why this works so well — you get a regular slot (evenings included), your own room to play in, and the full attention of a working singer-songwriter, all without leaving home.
Plenty of Wellingtonians already learn this way, fitting a weekly lesson neatly around busy lives.

Wherever you are
Online means distance is no barrier. I teach students right across New Zealand — from the cities to small towns a long way from any music teacher — and overseas, too. If you've got a connection and an instrument, we can make it work.
For students outside NZ, the only thing to plan around is the time difference. I'm happy to be mindful of time zones and find a slot that lands at a sensible hour for you, so the lesson feels relaxed rather than rushed at either end.

Good to know
Online lessons, answered
Do online music lessons actually work?
Yes — genuinely well. A music lesson is a one-to-one conversation, and that translates beautifully to video. With your camera set so I can see your hands and face, I can hear your tone, watch your technique and give the same close, encouraging feedback you'd get in the room. Plenty of students learn entirely online and make exactly the same progress as those who come in person.
What do I need for an online lesson?
Not much — a laptop, phone or tablet with a camera, a reasonably stable internet connection, a quiet room and your instrument (your voice counts). We use Zoom or a similar video call. The main thing is positioning the camera so I can see your hands and face clearly; I'll help you get it right in the first couple of minutes.
Can I take lessons from Wellington?
Absolutely — online lessons are made for it. I'm based at Waikanae Beach on the Kāpiti Coast, and Wellington and Porirua students learn with me entirely online, with no commute up or down the line. There's no in-person Wellington studio; it's all over video, which means flexible evening slots and your own room to play in.
Do you teach students outside NZ?
Yes — I teach students across New Zealand and overseas. Online means distance is no barrier; the only thing to plan around is the time difference, and I'm happy to find a slot that works for your time zone so the lesson lands at a sensible hour for you.
Is online the same price as in person?
Yes — online lessons are exactly the same price as in person — $80 per 60-minute lesson. The lesson, the attention and the care are identical whether you're in the room or on a screen, so the price is too.
