Find your real voice — breath, tone, phrasing and the confidence to perform — one-to-one with a folk-soul singer-songwriter who's spent 25+ years doing exactly this. Lessons are one-to-one, in person at Waikanae Beach on the Kāpiti Coast or online across New Zealand, and cost $80 for a 60-minute session.
Singing lessons
Find your real voice.
Singing isn't about sounding like someone else. It's about learning to use the instrument you already have — honestly, freely and with feeling. In these lessons we build the technique that lets your own voice come through: steady breath, an open relaxed tone, phrasing that means something, and the confidence to actually perform.
I teach the soulful, earthy, lived-in style of singing I've spent my life on — the kind that puts the song first. Whether you want to sing for the joy of it, hold a tune at an open mic, or front your own gigs, we'll get there one warm, unhurried lesson at a time.
No auditions. No judgement. Just a room (or a screen) where it's safe to be a beginner — and the patience to take you from your first nervous note to a voice you're genuinely proud of.
What you'll learn
The craft of real singing
-
Breath & support
The engine of every good voice — learning to breathe low and steady so your tone is strong, even and free of strain.
-
Tone & resonance
Finding the warm, open sound that's truly yours — and how to colour it for different songs and moods.
-
Phrasing
Where to breathe, where to lean, where to hold back — the timing and shaping that turns notes into meaning.
-
Dynamics
Light and shade — singing soft and singing big, and knowing when each one serves the song.
-
Stage confidence
Calming the nerves and learning to be present — so you can share a song with a room and actually enjoy it.
-
Honest delivery
The whole point — singing like you mean it, so a listener believes every word.
Who it's for
From first note to gigging singer
These lessons are built for real people, not prodigies. You're welcome here if you're a total beginner who's only ever sung in the car, an adult or late starter finally giving yourself permission to try, or a gigging singer who wants more control, more feeling and a voice that lasts the whole set.
- Complete beginners who've never had a lesson
- Adults and late starters — it is genuinely never too late
- Worship, choir and karaoke singers wanting more freedom and control
- Songwriters who want to sing their own songs with conviction
- Gigging and performing singers chasing more feeling and stamina
Worried you've left it too late? Here's why it's never too late to learn to sing.
Learn from a working singer
Taught by someone who still does it.
I've spent twenty-five-plus years writing, recording and performing — from London stages like Shepherd's Bush Empire and the Astoria 2 to a live session for RNZ National here in New Zealand, with records made in Dublin, London and New Orleans along the way.
That matters for one reason: I'm not teaching you exercises from a book. I'm teaching you what actually works in front of a crowd, on a recording, when it counts — the same craft I use every time I sing.

Good to know
Singing lessons, answered
Am I too old to start singing?
Not even close. The voice is an instrument you can develop at any age, and adult and late-starter students are some of the most rewarding to teach — you bring life and feeling to a song that no teenager can fake. We start exactly where you are, with no judgement and no rush.
Can tone-deaf people learn to sing?
Almost certainly, yes. True tone-deafness is genuinely rare — most people who think they can't pitch simply haven't been shown how to hear and match a note yet. That's a trainable skill, and we build it gently with simple ear and breath exercises until pitching starts to feel natural.
Do online singing lessons work?
Yes — really well. With a phone or laptop and a quiet room, online singing lessons are warm, focused and effective. Plenty of students learn entirely online from Wellington and right across the country, and it's the same lesson and same price as in person.
Do I need to read music?
No. You don't need to read a note of music to sing beautifully — almost no great singers started by reading. We learn by ear, by feel and by listening, the way songs have always been passed on. If you ever want the theory later, we can add it.
How much do singing lessons cost in NZ?
Singing lessons are $80 per 60-minute session — the same price in person on the Kāpiti Coast or online anywhere. Get in touch and I'll confirm current availability.
Do you teach beginners?
Absolutely — most students start as complete beginners. There's no audition and no prior experience needed, just a wish to sing. We begin with breath and a few comfortable notes and build from there at your pace.
